Single Ply Roof Installation and Repair

A Single-Ply Roof.

Quick, Convenient, and Consistent

If you have heard the term “single ply membrane roofing”, it is likely because you are in need of repairing or replacing your commercial roof. Understanding the difference between the two main types is important so that you can make the selection that best suits you. When it comes down to it, single ply membranes are essentially sheets of rubber as well as other synthetics that can be mechanically fastened, ballasted, or chemically adhered to the insulation. This creates a layer of protection for your commercial facility. Even though single-ply roofing is one of the more well-known types of commercial roofing material, there are choices to make when it comes down to your facility’s needs and budget. If you have any questions about whether a single-ply roof is for you, reaching out to Texas Cool Roofing & Waterproofing is a great first step. Different Types of Single-Ply Commercial Roofing Membrane

What are the different types of single ply membrane and which one is for you? The two main types for this style of roofing are ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO). Their main differences lay in their energy efficiencies, how they are installed, and their chemical makeup.

EPDM

This single-ply membrane consists of a synthetic rubber compound in order to give it greater flexibility. This type of single-ply membrane has been used for commercial roofing facilities going back to the 1960s and is considered to be a time-tested option. Despite its familiarity and trusted history, EPDM currently is used in just 20% of the commercial roofing market. There are several thickness options to choose from and white/black for the color, though the EPDM generally results in a darker gray or black as a natural color. This is not good for reflecting UV rays and keeping out the heat.

TPO

This is one of the fastest-growing systems in the commercial roofing market today. TPO is made up of a single layer of reinforcing synthetics that can be used to cover flat roofs. TPO is generally the more accepted option because of its reflective properties. That means it keeps UV rays out, allowing your building to remain cooler with less help from your building’s HVAC system.
